Inside the cellular-aging research that's just getting started.

Longevity peptide research is early, exploratory, and closely watched by people tracking the science of aging at the cellular level. These four compounds represent different angles on that question.

01

Epithalon

Telomerase-related peptide

Epithalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide, meaning it's built from just four amino acids, developed out of Russian aging research dating back to the late 20th century. It's one of the more well-known names in longevity-focused peptide research.

Studies have explored its potential relationship to telomerase activity — the enzyme involved in maintaining the protective caps on chromosomes — as well as its effects on circadian rhythm regulation in animal models.

02

MOTS-c

Mitochondrial-derived peptide

MOTS-c is unusual among peptides in that it's encoded by mitochondrial DNA rather than the cell's nucleus. This origin point is what first drew researchers to study its role in cellular energy production.

Research has focused on its role in metabolic regulation and how cells respond to stress, positioning MOTS-c within a broader scientific interest in how mitochondrial health relates to aging.

"Aging research keeps ending up in the same place: the mitochondria."

03

Humanin

Mitochondrial-derived peptide

Like MOTS-c, Humanin is a mitochondrial-derived peptide, discovered through research into cells that seemed unusually resistant to certain types of stress-induced damage.

Studies have examined its cytoprotective properties — meaning its potential role in helping cells survive stress — within the broader context of cellular aging research.

04

SS-31

Mitochondria-targeted peptide

SS-31 was specifically designed to concentrate in mitochondrial membranes, distinguishing it from peptides that are mitochondria-derived rather than mitochondria-targeted.

Research has focused on mitochondrial function and oxidative stress, studying how the peptide's targeted delivery to this specific part of the cell might relate to broader questions about cellular aging.
